Former American Fisheries Society (AFS) President John J. Magnuson established the Committee on Names of Aquatic Invertebrates (CNAI) on September 30, 1981. The main goal of this committee is to achieve uniformity and avoid confusion in vernacular nomenclature of U.S. and Canadian aquatic invertebrates.
