The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) was established by an interstate compact, entered into by the fifteen Atlantic coast states (Maine through Florida). The ASMFC provides a forum for discussion and resolution of common problems and assists the states in developing joint research and management programs. Since about 1995, the ASMFC has focused attention on educating state fisheries and stock-assessment biologists on current assessment principles and models. Several levels of workshops have been sponsored, including an advanced workshop conducted jointly with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). This workshop was developed to provide advanced training on how to incorporate uncertainty into fishery models and to develop recommendations for the ASMFC and Atlantic Coast states on methods to more fully incorporate uncertainty into state and interjurisdictional stock assessments.
