Continuing Education Courses
Registration for these courses is separate from the Virtual Annual Meeting. Attendees may attend either day or both.

Environmental Implications of Discarding Fish in Spanish Trawl Fisheries

Overfishing contributes to the depletion of fish stocks. Among fishing practices, discarding fish is a waste of valuable resources and results in lost income that is associated with its effects on future stock growth. This practice depends on several factors, although trawl fisheries account for the highest quantity of discards. In this work, the effects of a specific section of the Galician (northwestern Spain) bottom trawl fishery were evaluated by using the ecological footprint, focusing on the contribution of the rate of discards.

Ice Fishing Trip Promotes Collaboration and Networking Across the USA–Canada Border

On a cold Friday afternoon in January, 13 students from the AFS Québec Student Subunit packed into a few cars in Montréal and drove south. We crossed the U.S. border and arrived at a beautiful wooden house in northern Vermont shortly after nightfall, soon joined by three more students from the University of New Hampshire’s recently formed AFS Student Subunit. The house belonged to Pete Emerson, a fisheries biologist with the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and President of the Atlantic International Chapter of AFS, who had graciously volunteered to put up a large group of hungry students, then take us all ice fishing on Lake Memphremagog.

Black Bullhead Removal from a Headwater Trout Stream in Southern California

Black Bullhead were found in the last known native coastal Rainbow Trout population in San Diego County in 2007. Removal using baited minnow traps began in 2016, where 1,315 were removed over the course of four trips. Follow up surveys using the same methods in 2017 and 2018 captured zero Black Bullhead.

Effect of Transport Method on Subsequent Survivorship and Gonad Yield/Quality in the Red Sea Urchin

Sea urchin gonad enhancement entails collecting low-gonad-yield sea urchins from the wild, placing them in land-based or sea-based captivity, and feeding them a prepared or natural diet to produce high quality gonads for marketing. It is imperative that appropriate collection and transportation techniques are developed to maximize subsequent survivorship and gonad yield of sea urchins, but little research has focused on this aspect.

Water Resources Development Act Offers Potential Benefits to Aquatic Resources

AFS joined several conservation and angling organizations in submitting comments to Congress regarding the House and Senate versions of the Water Resources Development Act, which will promote the use of natural infrastructure projects by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
