The American Fisheries Society (AFS) and the National Sea Grant College Program partner to organize a special biennial symposium series addressing contemporary fisheries science issues with significant management implications. These symposia will bring together fisheries experts from a variety of sectors to share current research and policy information with fisheries professionals. The proceedings from these symposia are published in a timely manner, making the information available to a large audience for inclusion in the management process.

To date, there have been 5 such symposia covering a variety of highly relevant topics. The first in the series looked at essential fish habitat during the 1998 AFS Annual Meeting held in Hartford, CT. This was followed by a look at the effect of climate change on fisheries at the 2001 Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ. The 3rd symposium presented research on aquatic protected areas at the 2003 meeting in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Cooperative research and management in fisheries was dicussed during the fourth symposium held in 2005 in Anchorage, AK. Most recently, the 5th symposium in the series was held at the 2007 AFS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, the impacts of natural hazards on fishery ecosystems were discussed.
