The incumbent in this position performs duties in the Fish Health Laboratory that requires specialized skills, knowledge and abilities in microbiological disciplines. This position assists the Fish Health Unit Leader in testing all WDFW and co-op hatchery broodstocks for regulated viral pathogens. Also completes analysis of broodstock and juvenile samples to assess the presence of Renibacterium salmoninarum,(BKD), in support of BKD control programs at state hatcheries. Tests are performed according to American Fisheries Society Fish Health Blue Book/USFWS Standard Procedures or other methods as agreed. The laboratory receives numerous samples on many days which requires the incumbent to employ strict biosecurity procedures to prevent sample cross contamination. The incumbent must keep accurate records to properly track the samples.
Graduation from a four year accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology or another laboratory science which includes at least 20 semester or 30 quarter credit hours in microbiology and 2 years experience in a microbiology laboratory, preferably with experience in the sub-disciplines of virology and cell culture.
