Univ of MD Center for Environmental Science – Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, Solomons, MD

We seek applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in the ecology of estuarine and coastal food webs. We particularly seek candidates using quantitative approaches to address applied and fundamental questions at the ecosystem-scale. Research areas of interest include higher trophic-level interactions, food chain cascades, climate effects upon food webs, stable isotopic tracer applications, and field studies of multi-species interactions. Enthusiasm for collaborative work within multidisciplinary teams, and the ability to conduct synthetic, high-impact research are important attributes. The successful applicant will establish and maintain an externally funded research program. Preference will be given to a junior faculty hire, but outstanding senior scientists with interests in programmatic development will also be considered.

The position is envisioned to complement and enhance existing strengths in ecology, fisheries science, geochemistry, and ecotoxicology at the Laboratory and in coastal sciences more broadly within the UMCES (http://www.umces.edu). CBL’s location on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay affords excellent opportunities to develop research on the Bay and its watershed, although UMCES faculty research coastal ecosystems worldwide. Field studies are supported by a 24.7 m research vessel (http://www.umces.edu/cbl/research-discovery/rv-rachel-carson). CBL has state-of-the-art sea water systems to support controlled tank and mesocosm experiments (http://www.umces.edu/cbl/fisheries-research-complex), and analytical facilities (http://www.umces.edu/node/9618). The successful candidate will teach graduate courses in the University of Maryland System MEES Program (http://www.umces.edu/education/graduate)

Qualifications

Ph.D. is required at time of appointment and postdoctoral experience is preferred.
